deputy chairman of Abiquim’s Management Board, re-
vealed that the industry attained the end of last year with
a trade deficit probably amounting to US$ 28.1 billion.
As reported by the entity, the chemical industry turned
over US$ 153 billion in sales for the year. But the result
is negative nonetheless: exports dropped to US$ 15.1 bil-
lion, while imports rose to US$ 43.1 billion. US$ 22 bil-
lion worth of investments extending until 2016 are now
planned in order to fight that trade deficit and the risk of
deindustrialization.
According to De Marchi, insufficient competitiveness
has been one of the key factors leading to the current fig-
ures of Brazil’s chemical industry. However, the executive
remarked, “the governmental actions required by the in-
dustry, as agreed upon with the Council on Competitive-
ness of the
“Brasil Maior”
Plan, are more current and nec-
essary than ever before in order to restore competitiveness
and attract investments.”
Events - Greenbuilding Brazil Grows in 2013 in
Line with New Reality of Sustainability
To meet the demand from exhibiting companies, the
event is moving to a larger space, confirming Brazil’s
prominent position in the global movement to promote
sustainable construction, as a total of 78 buildings are al-
ready LEED-certified, and more than 600 are in the pro-
cess of obtaining their certification. The number increased
by 50 percent in relation to 2011.
The building and construction industry’s adoption of
sustainable practices having low environmental impact is
part of an irreversible process. And the success achieved
by the Greenbuilding Brazil International Conference &
Expo, which will attain its 4
th
edition this year, is one of
the most significant signs of the strength of this market.
Promoted by Reed Exhibitions Alcantara Machado e held
by Green Building Council Brazil (GBC Brazil), the trade
show is growing in both space and relevance in 2013. The
4
th
edition will be held at Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo,
with an exhibit space of 8,000 square meters. Accord-
ing to Paulo Octávio Pereira de Almeida, executive vice
president of the organizing entity, the event is expected
to receive 120 national and international sponsors, 1,600
conference participants and 7,400 visitors and qualified
buyers.
The event director Liliane Bortoluci believes that
“Greenbuilding Brazil has already established itself as a
reference for sustainable construction. In addition, not
only is it a groundbreaking initiative in the Brazilian mar-
ket, the trade show is unique and highly renowned. Only
at Greenbuilding Brazil will you find a specialized exhibi-
tion and an excellent conference together at one place.”
In 2012, 1,400 people participated in the 3
rd
edition
and watched presentations delivered by 116 lecturers, in-
cluding professionals of great renown, such as Scot Horst,
senior vice president for LEED at the US Green Building
Council (USGBC), Chada Oppenheim, president of the
firm Oppenheim Architecture + Design, and Michael
Wurzel, co-owner of the English firm Foster & Partners.
The exhibition comprised 98 national and international
brands in an area of 6,500 square meters, where 7,234 visi-
tors seeking to refresh their knowledge of the trade, hatch
new deals and tackle networking opportunities were re-
ceived over the three days of show.
