Alwayscontemporary intheconstruction industry,ceram-
ic tilemanufacturersareconstantly investing innewpigmen-
tationtechnologies.
Just like in fashion, architecturealso follows trends, embody-
ingan immenseuniverseofwoods, texturesandceramicsamong
many other elements, thus creating new fashions, styles and
sportingnewcolorschemes.
Theceramic tile isanexampleof theconstant transformation
of architecture. In thefifties, the trendwas to apply small pieces
withmany illustrations—white tiles withmotives in blue is a
classic.
Pieces with those characteristics made history, proving that
ceramic materials, with their different colors and forms, hold
extreme relevance in the construction and decoration environ-
ments.Thecolorsand shapesof ceramic tileshavealsochanged.
Accordingly, themarket inpigments for ceramic tiles iskeeping
pacewith theevolution in the industry.
“Tilemanufacturershavereachedsuchahigh leveldue to the
quality requirements imposed on their products by companies
that are set apartbyboth the technologiesand the rawmaterials
employed,”remarksCamilaPecerini,productdirectoratEvonik’s
InorganicMaterials business for LatinAmerica. “Andpigments
are, without a doubt, an important commodity inmanufactur-
ing,addressingmoreandmorethespecificneedsofconstruction
projectsand trends indecoration,”sheadds.
ColoringtheIndustry
Colors and drawings are some of the highlights in ceramic
tiles,and themostcommoncolorsareblue,green,blackandred.
But having color isnot enough; is it necessary topresent ranges
andshades,which isnoteasy toachieve.
“For iron and chromium oxides, the bigger challenge to be
considered is the color portfolio, that is, the absence of brighter
andmorecheerful colorsdue to thecharacteristics andprocess-
ing of the product. Lanxess has used its know-how to develop
newproducts,meeting theneedsof the industry,” saysTaniaRe-
ginaMoreno, application technicianatLanxess.
Thinkingofnewcolors,Aromat recently invested to increase
its rangeof colorings. “Today, our companyworkswith the tra-
ditional ironoxides (red, yellow, black) andhas newones, such
as Yellow 196, Green 410 andBlue 10K425 from the Shepherd
line,whicharehigh-qualityproducts incleanershades, for those
wishing toset thecoloringof theirproduct linesapart fromcon-
ventional ones,” ponders Fernando Rosa, technical manager at
Aromat.

According toanarticleonnewconstruction site technologies
withpave theway to improvement inbuildingandconstruction,
byLuizCarlosMesquitaScheid,CommercialdirectoratTeclógi-
ca, the construction industry is starting to implement, although
slowly, the use of mobile devices and automation solutions.
“Whatwehavenoticed,however, is that theuseof smartphones
and tabletsonconstruction sites isoneof themain trends in the
industry,asitwillenableabetterprocessmanagementandthere-
placementofmanual controls, which still are themostused. It is
no surprise that a recent assessment by theConstruction Indus-
try’sUnion, known for short as Sinduscon, inpartnershipwith
FundaçãoGetulioVargas
, shows that 60percent of executives in
the industryhaveplans to invest in technology,”saysScheid.
The article states that themaingoals includedecision-mak-
ing based on information that would yield better quality and
agility to theprocess, environmental sustainabilityand cost re-
duction. That kindof concern is groundedon the fact that the
construction industry is responsible for 70percent of allwaste
generated in thenation’smajorurbancenters, alsoaccording to
Sinduscondata.
“Oversights with excess concrete in beams or waste of re-
sources represent an addition of around 30 percent to the cost
of constructionprojects s andan increaseof 11 to20percent in
thevolumeofmaterials.For thisandotherreasons, construction
companies are always seeking to improve their processes and,
as a result, to reducematerial waste on construction sites,” says
Scheid.
Using applications that run in different operating systems,
professionals working in different departments can experience
on the palm of their hands a better management of ongoing
constructionprojects.Thenewmobilesolutionsavailable for the
construction industryhavemodular characteristics andallow to
usersmanage information related toproduction records, safety,
quality, inspection and control ofmaterials. Data is collected in
real timeandcanbe integrated to theERPmanagement systems
ofbothbuildersandcontractors.
